Vigo

Atlantic, industrial and cross-border: a city whose history has been shaped by what moves through it.

AT EUROPE'S ATLANTIC EDGE

A city built through connections beyond itself.

Vigo looks west to the Atlantic and south towards Portugal. Sea, industry, mobility and exchange are woven into the city’s identity — an apt setting for a conference about what becomes visible at boundaries.

AtlanticA maritime city whose port and ría connect it to international flows.
Cross-borderGalicia and northern Portugal form a lived interface of proximity, difference and exchange.
IndustrialManufacturing, automotive activity, logistics, services and global connections coexist in the metropolitan economy.

The Cíes Islands and the lighthouse

The conference identity draws on the lighthouse as both local image and scientific metaphor. A lighthouse does not remove uncertainty from the sea; it helps us locate ourselves within it. From Vigo, the Cíes Islands sit at the entrance to the ría — part boundary, part passage, and an enduring point of orientation.

Visiting the Cíes Islands in October

Book your place in advance with an authorised boat operator. In October, access is arranged as part of an organised guided group; ask the operator to confirm the visit arrangements and any required authorisation. The National Park's visitor information ↗ explains the rules. The separate online pre-authorisation ↗ is for the high season, not the normal October booking procedure.

For October departures, check Naviera Nabia ↗, which publishes low-season guided visits. The Park also lists Mar de Ons ↗ among its authorised operators; ask it directly whether it has a departure on your chosen October date. Sailing depends on the operator's schedule and the weather.
